BOOK AWARD FOR A FILMMAKER

The Society for Visual Anthropology has awarded Andrea Heckman, talented photographer, writer and filmmaker (See Ausangate on the DER site)  the John Collier Award for the use of still photography in a publication.

Her book Woven Stories published by the University of New Mexico press is lush with glorious full color images that showcase the textiles and the lives of the Quechua people who weave them, high in the Peruvian Andes.

Congratulations Andrea for a beautiful book and a stunningly visual film.

FLOCK OF DODO’S TO SCREEN AT BOSTON’s MFA

Set your calendars for a fun event. The Museum of Fine Arts, has booked a screening at 7:15 on Saturday February 17th for the Boston premiere of Randy Olsen’s provocative and humourous investigation of the flap over the teaching of intelligent design over evolution in his feature length documentary Flock of Dodos.

Local luminaries from our illustrious academic institutions are sure to be in attendance. Join the filmmaker Randy Olson, and his mom Muffy Moose (she provides some delightful commentary in the film) at the MFA on the 17th of February. We hope to see you all there!

TIMOTHY ASCH RETROSPECTIVE IN BRAZIL, 11/2006

Every year in Belo Horizonte a panorama of diversified audiovisual productions from various countries is presented, which includes the exhibition of contemporary and classic films and videos. Carried out in association with the Associação Filmes de Quintal and the Departament of Sociology an Anthropology from the College of Philosophy and Human Sciences at UFMG, the event constitutes a space for discussion of works exploring audiovisual resources in order to build a dialog with social life and cultural diversity.

The forumdoc.bh’s format includes film and video screening, commented by specialists and organizers, as well as debates, workshops, conferences and printed releases on the themes. All activities in the program, freely ofered to general public, aim at stimulating and improving productions in the area.

Film sessions - divided into categories such as Competitive Showcase, Classic Documentary Showcase, Memory of Brazilian Documentary Showcase and Author Retrospective - and other activities take place in Cine Humberto Mauro (at Palacio das Artes), Auditório Sônia Viegas (UFMG campus) and in other places such as streets and square blocks in different parts of the city, thus diversifying its audience and increasing attendance numbers.

Part of the program is extended to the universities, schools and cultural centers that also screen films from the forumdoc.bh collections.

Besides the benefits obtained from cultural incentive laws, the Festival also counts on resources from intitutions that support research and outreach activities, such as CNPq, Fapemig and Fundação Mendes Pimentel.

FILM WORKSHOPS IN MOROCCO

Shoot, direct, produce and edit your own documentary under the winter sun at this unique documentary training workshop at the Cinémathèque de Tanger, Morocco.

The aim of this residential course is to allow participants to immerse themselves totally in the practice of documentary filmmaking. Each participant writes, shoots and edits their very own short documentary film. There is an emphasis on hands-on training and respect for the creative process. The course is intensive, practical and most of all, a lot of fun! Over the two-week course six overseas participants will work in collaboration with six emerging Moroccan documentary filmmakers, exchanging and developing ideas together.
